UFC 67 Stunner
Friday, July 17th, 2009UFC 67 Stunner: UFC 67 was planned as one of the most star-filled UFC events. It was scheduled to feature welterweight and middleweight title fights as well as the UFC debuts of one-time PRIDE stars Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic. But it turned out that there were no championship bouts. A welterweight title bout between champion Georges St. Pierre and challenger Matt Serra was postponed when St. Pierre injured a knee and was forced to withdraw.

And the main event became a non-title fight when Travis Lutter, who had won the middleweight division in “The Ultimate Fighter 4” to become the challenger to Anderson Silva, failed to make weight.
Lutter inexplicably came in at 187 pounds, two pounds over the limit. He lost only a half-pound after being given another two hours to make weight and thus lost his title shot.
Lutter performed well in the first round becoming one of the few fighters to claim a single round over Silva on the scorecards in his UFC career, but was submitted in the second. Silva slapped on a triangle choke and ended the fight with strikes to the head as Lutter was trying to escape.
Both Jackson and Filipovic won their UFC debuts. Jackson knocked out Marvin Eastman in the second round, avenging an earlier loss. Filipovic defeated Eddie Sanchez, but was not impressive.
